Responsible Gambling

Playing the lottery can be fun. But it's important to understand a few mathematical basics and to recognise when a hobby becomes a problem.

The maths behind the lottery

In Lotto 6aus49, players pay in more over time than they receive back as winnings. This isn't an opinion. It's by design: part of the stakes goes to public causes, part to administration, and only the remainder is paid out as prizes.

The probability of matching six numbers plus the Superzahl is 1 in 140,343,756. Statistically, you would need to play every Saturday for over 2.7 million years to hit that jackpot once.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't play. It does mean you should be aware of what you're doing. And that the lottery is not a path to wealth.

When does gambling become a problem?

Problem gambling doesn't start only when someone loses everything. Warning signs include:

  • You play more often or with higher stakes than you originally intended
  • You try to recoup losses by gambling more
  • You feel restless or irritable when you can't play
  • You hide your gambling from family or friends
  • You borrow money to keep playing
  • You use money meant for other things (rent, bills) to gamble
  • Gambling is affecting your work, relationships or health

If one or more of these points seem familiar, to you or someone you know, it's worth seeking help. That's not a sign of weakness; it's a smart move.
